Mont-Saint-Michel on screen: the facts

The short answer: no Harry Potter film was shot at Mont-Saint-Michel, and J. K. Rowling has never cited the Mont as a source of inspiration; the Hogwarts library is the rooms of the Bodleian Library in Oxford. The castle in the Disney logo is Sleeping Beauty’s, not the Mont. However, the kingdom of Corona in Tangled is often said to be inspired by Mont-Saint-Michel: that is the only credible link.

Harry Potter: the most persistent myth

It resurfaces every summer, and it is false. No film in the series was shot here, neither outside nor inside, and the author has never mentioned the Mont as a source. The confusion likely stems from the silhouette: a rock, a 160 m spire, stairs rising into darkness. The library people think they recognise is elsewhere: the rooms of the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

Disney: one misconception and one genuine link

The castle in the studio’s logo is Sleeping Beauty’s, not the Mont. However, the kingdom of Corona in Tangled is often said to be inspired by Mont-Saint-Michel, and the resemblance holds: a fortified town on a rock, connected to the mainland by a single path. That is the only link I endorse.

What people actually recognise

A silhouette, and it is enough to create false memories. The Mont and its bay have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, and the Mont is one of France’s most visited monuments: the image is so widespread that it ends up attached to films where it does not appear. What you will truly see on site, in order, is described in what to see on Mont-Saint-Michel.

Insider tip

If you come for the image, come at the right time rather than the right place: the ramparts after 5:00 pm, or on a spring-tide evening, when the coefficient exceeds 110 and the water surrounds the rock for one to two hours. The dates are on tides and the bay.

Visiting the abbey

The abbey is the only paid part of the site, its price varies by season, and the self-guided visit takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.
