Wind, all year round
The bay is flat and exposed: the wind sweeps through it. At the top, in front of the abbey church and along the ramparts, it’s always colder than at the foot of the rock, even in July. A lightweight windbreaker in your bag solves the problem; an umbrella, on the other hand, is useless.
For the bay: barefoot
The two-hour guided walk is done barefoot, and boots are banned because they fill with water and trap you. Pack quick-dry shorts or trousers, a towel, water, and shoes to put back on afterwards. The walk follows the tide and won’t wait for latecomers, so prepare the night before: everything is on tides and the bay.
The detail everyone forgets: suitcases and large bags are not allowed in the abbey, nor are knives or scooters. If you arrive by train with luggage, sort it out before climbing, because no one fancies going back down 350 steps.
