My reviews of six Mont-Saint-Michel tours

Reviews
In short: I’ve revisited the six tours you can book in advance for Mont-Saint-Michel, from the basic entry ticket to the private tour. The highest-rated is the guided walk across the bay (4,8 out of 140 reviews); the lowest-rated is the coach day trip from Paris with free time (4,5 out of 5,859 reviews), and its score mostly reflects the journey’s length. The one I book most often is still the abbey ticket, the least expensive of the six.

How I rate

Two things shape these pages, and I keep them separate. The first is the rating shown on the booking page, along with its number of reviews: I copy it exactly, without rounding or inflating it. A 4.5 rating from 5,859 reviews carries more weight than a 4.8 from 140, and I say so when that’s the case.

The second is my own judgement, based on three questions. Does the tour offer something you can’t do on your own? Does the price match what’s actually included? And does it fit into the day you have? The bay walk wins on the first question, the abbey ticket on the second, and both Paris excursions lose on the third. The full tour-by-tour breakdown is on the comparison page.

I’m not paid to rank one tour above another. We earn a commission if you book through our links, at the same price for you, and that doesn’t change the order below: it’s explained on the affiliate disclosure.

Rankings

  1. 1. Abbey entry ticket — 4.6/5. The only paid part of Mont-Saint-Michel, at the ticket-office price and without queuing. It’s the least expensive of the six and the best value for money.
  2. 2. Guided bay walk — 4.8/5. The highest-rated, and the only thing you can’t safely do alone. Two hours barefoot, timed to the tide.
  3. 3. Private tour with abbey entry — 4.8/5. A qualified guide, a maximum of ten people, ticket included. By far the most expensive of the six, and only worth it for groups.
  4. 4. Guided village walk — 4.7/5. An hour and a half to two hours of storytelling through streets you can enter for free. Abbey entry not included.
  5. 5. Guided day trip from Paris — 4.6/5. The better of the two coach day trips: abbey ticket, audio guide app and village tour included. The guide speaks English.
  6. 6. Self-guided day trip from Paris — 4.5/5. Fourteen hours door-to-door for about four hours on site. The lowest score of the six, and it reflects the journey, not Mont-Saint-Michel.

If you’d rather choose by traveller type — with family, in a day, without a car — the answer is on the best Mont-Saint-Michel tours.

The six tours

What these ratings don’t tell you

None of the six gives you access to the village: it’s free, open 24/7, and there’s no entry control. None shortens the 350 steps, none changes the tide’s timing. What really shapes your day is the time you arrive: before 9:30 am or after 5:00 pm, Mont-Saint-Michel is a different place. I’ve listed the best times and months on when to visit.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the ratings on this site come from?

From the GetYourGuide booking pages, recorded in French. I copy the rating and number of reviews exactly as they appear. The comments that follow are mine, and focus on what the tour actually includes: see the comparison of the six tours.

Which Mont-Saint-Michel tour is the highest-rated?

The guided bay walk and the private tour both score 4.8, from 140 and 133 reviews. The abbey ticket scores 4.6, but from 11,365 reviews, which is a far more reliable base. The details are in my review of the bay crossing.

Should you book a guided tour for Mont-Saint-Michel?

No. The village is freely accessible, and the abbey can be easily explored on your own with a guidebook in about 1 hour 15 minutes. A guide is only necessary for the bay, where you shouldn’t go alone. I’ve weighed the pros and cons here: visiting without a guide.
