Guided walk in the bay: my review
Why this is the only visit I recommend without reservation
The bay of Mont-Saint-Michel experiences Europe’s highest tides. There are quicksands, mist that descends without warning, and a sea that rises quickly. You don’t go alone—this isn’t just a precaution, it’s the rule. Two hours with someone who knows the terrain, for one of the least expensive options of the six: it’s the best safety-to-price ratio on the site. The departure follows the tide and won’t wait for latecomers. That’s the only serious constraint: the time isn’t negotiable, and it changes daily. Bring a windbreaker, quick-dry shorts, a towel, and water; boots are not allowed, and you walk barefoot. The full list is on what to wear.

Who it’s best for
For those spending at least half a day here and wanting to see the Mont from where it’s best viewed: the sand. Who it’s not for
For those coming from Paris for the day: the tide’s schedule won’t align with your coach, so consider the guided excursion. For those with mobility issues, as two hours on soft sand barefoot isn’t easy. And for those with time for only one thing: in that case, visit the abbey, as described in my review of the ticket.
The Mont is surrounded by water only when the tidal coefficient exceeds 110, for one to two hours around high tide. If you want that iconic view, plan your visit around the high tides announced for 2026, on Friday 14 August at 9:28 pm and Saturday 12 September at 9:02 pm.

Can you cross Mont-Saint-Michel Bay without a guide?

Does the walk really take 2 hours?
Yes: two hours from the main entrance of Mont-Saint-Michel, including the crossing of the quicksands and a loop around the village at the foot of the abbey. Parking is included. To plan the rest of your day, see how long to plan.
Do I need to buy a separate ticket for the abbey?
Yes, if you wish to enter: the bay walk does not include entry. Tickets must be purchased separately at the official monument rate, which is higher from 1 April to 30 September: all details are available onthe abbey tickets page.
